SOLDIERS CAUGHT ON TAPE STONING CRIPPLED DOG; PETA CALLS FOR COURTS-MARTIAL AND OFFERS $5,000 REWARD
Online Video Shows Soldiers’ Throwing Rocks, Laughing at Seriously Injured Dog

Baghdad — A disturbing video allegedly taken from a CD found in Baghdad’s Green Zone apparently shows American soldiers’ throwing rocks at a crippled dog and laughing as the dog hobbles away on two legs. "That is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life," one person is heard saying. "You wanna go over and kill it?" asks another. The identities of the soldiers shown in the video footage are unknown, which is why PETA is offering as much as $5,000 for information identifying and locating the men involved.
Pointing out that all cruelty-to-animals cases—even those that take place in a war zone—must be taken seriously, PETA is calling for a criminal investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be court-martialed if they are found to be in the military.
According to leading mental health professionals and law enforcement agencies, perpetrators of violent acts against animals are often repeat offenders who pose a serious threat to humans and other animals. Steven D. Green, the former soldier accused of orchestrating the murder of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and her family, had previously set a puppy on fire and threw the animal off a roof, according to testimony at his alleged coconspirators’ court-martial hearing.
"The men in this video are a disgrace to their unit and to their country," says PETA Foundation staffer William Rivas-Rivas, a former Navy officer and a Persian Gulf veteran. "They are cowards, taking their aggression out on the most defenseless being available to them. The ‘best of the best’ don’t behave like cruel, bullying thugs."
Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact PETA’s Domestic Animal Abuse department at DAWR&I--PETA@peta.org or 757-622-7382, extension 8037.

TAKE ACTION, PLEASE:
Demand Criminal Investigation of U.S. Soldiers Caught on Video Abusing Dog
Animal advocates nationwide are horrified over a video allegedly taken from a CD found in Baghdad's Green Zone. This video, which recently surfaced on the Internet, depicts what appear to be U.S. soldiers taunting and tormenting a seriously injured dog. Several men laugh while pitching rocks at the suffering animal. One participant proclaims, "That's the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life!" as the dog yelps in pain and attempts to flee on two legs.
Causing animals to suffer unnecessarily is a crime in the United States, where citizens refuse to stand for such cruelty. One cannot imagine that this kind of behavior would be tolerated of any citizen, including our soldiers.
Please contact the secretary of defense and demand that the Department of Defense investigate this matter and hold responsible any soldier found to be involved in this incident. Also, be sure to forward this alert to your friends and family members and ask them to speak up today.
